The Other Side of Sustainability: A Recap of Our Earth Day Event with UConn

On Earth Day 2024, we at Adapt Agency had the privilege of participating in a transformative panel discussion hosted by the University of Connecticut (UConn). Titled "The Other Side of Sustainability: Getting to Net Zero," this event brought together industry leaders to address the growing environmental impact of the digital world and explore strategies to achieve net zero emissions. The session was moderated by Robert Bird, Professor of Business Law and Eversource Energy Chair in Business Ethics at UConn, and featured our very own CEO, Kresten, and Co-founder and Managing Director of Adapt USA, Doug Sisko.

UConn Sustainability Talks

Kicking Off the Discussion

The internet currently accounts for 4% of global carbon emissions—a number that is steadily rising. This serves as a powerful reminder of the urgency with which we must adopt solutions to reduce our digital carbon footprint.

A Vision for Digital Sustainability

Kresten took the floor to share our approach to digital sustainability at Adapt Agency. He introduced the concept of "system value," which integrates business, environmental, and societal considerations into decision-making processes. The internet’s carbon emissions are double those of the airline industry, and streaming services significantly contribute to this footprint. He urged the audience to adopt mindful digital behaviors, such as reducing unnecessary streaming and minimizing email use.

UConn System Value

Kresten also detailed our commitment to creating environment-friendly digital solutions. He explained that 80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined in the design phase, emphasizing the importance of sustainable design from the outset. At Adapt, we focus on green hosting, performance optimization, and reducing digital waste to achieve our sustainability goals.

Doug's Insights on Behavioral Change

Doug emphasized the need for a shift in digital consumption behavior. Achieving net zero by 2050 requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions to nearly zero and balancing any residual emissions through permanent removals. He highlighted the role of educational institutions like UConn in fostering sustainability through research and innovative models that create shared value.

Doug also discussed the challenges and opportunities in promoting digital sustainability. He noted that while many companies intend to be green, sustainability often becomes an afterthought. He stressed the importance of incorporating sustainable practices into business operations from the beginning, rather than delaying them to later phases.
